رَكِبتُI rode أُطَوِّفُI make the rounds فيin الجانِبَينِthe two sides
رَكِبتُ أُطَوِّفُ في الجانِبَينِ
وَأَقطَعُand I while away عُمرَthe span of زَمانِthe time of الصِيامِfasting
وَأَقطَعُ عُمرَ زَمانِ الصِيامِ
I rode, making the rounds on both sides,
I rode around, touring both sides,
and whiling away the time of fasting.
And spent the days of fasting time.
فَلَمso did not أَلقَI meet إِلّاexcept صَديقاًa friend يَجودُhe is generous
فَلَم أَلقَ إِلّا صَديقاً يَجودُ
بِطيبِwith pleasantness of الكَلامِspeech وَحُسنِand graciousness of السَلامِgreetings
بِطيبِ الكَلامِ وَحُسنِ السَلامِ
Yet I met only a friend who was generous
I met none except a generous friend
with pleasant words and gracious greetings.
With kind words and greetings sublime.
وَلَوand if أَنَّنيthat I كُنتُI was فيin بَيتِهِhis house
وَلَو أَنَّني كُنتُ في بَيتِهِ
سَقانيhe gave me to drink بِكَفَّيهِwith his two palms كَأسَthe cup of الحِمامِdeath
سَقاني بِكَفَّيهِ كَأسَ الحِمامِ
And were I in his house,
Had I been a guest in his abode,
he would give me the cup of death with both his hands.
He would have served me a drink so fine,
فَكَيفَso how أَكونُwould I be إِذاif ماemphatic particle قَصَدتُI set out
فَكَيفَ أَكونُ إِذا ما قَصَدتُ
لِأَكلِfor eating الطَعامِfood وَشُربِand drinking المُدامِwine
لِأَكلِ الطَعامِ وَشُربِ المُدامِ
So how would I fare if I went
How could I be if I had come
to eat food and drink wine?
For food and drink and wine?
