أُحاجيكَI pose you a riddle ماwhat قَبرٌa grave عديمٌlacking تُرابُهُits earth
أُحاجيكَ ما قَبرٌ عديمٌ تُرابُهُ
بِهِin it مَعشَرٌa company مَوتىthe dead وَإِنand although لَمnot يُكَفَّنواthey were shrouded
بِهِ مَعشَرٌ مَوتى وَإِن لَم يُكَفَّنوا
I pose you a riddle: what grave has no earth,
I ask you, what grave has dust devoid
And holds a company of the dead, though they have not been shrouded?
Of dead though unshrouded in winding sheets?
سَلَوتُI forgot عنِabout التِبيانِexplanation مُدَّةَfor the duration of قَبرِهِمtheir burial
سَلَوتُ عنِ التِبيانِ مُدَّةَ قَبرِهِم
فَإِنbut if نُبِشواthey are dug up يَوماًone day مِنَof الدَهرِtime بَيَّنواthey explain
فَإِن نُبِشوا يَوماً مِنَ الدَهرِ بَيَّنوا
I put explanation out of mind for as long as they lay buried;
I've questioned the sand about the condition of their grave
But if they are dug up one day, they make things clear.
For if dug up one day, it would make all clear
