تَعَجَّبَتshe marveled إِذwhen رَأَتنيshe saw me فَوقَatop مَكسورٍa broken-down beast
مِنَof الحَميرِthe donkeys عَقيرِwounded الظَهرِthe back مَضرورِafflicted
She marveled when she saw me astride a broken-down beast,
A donkey, sore-backed and suffering,
مِنfrom بَعدِafter كُلِّevery أَمينِsteady الرُسغِthe pastern مُعتَرِضٍprancing sideways
فيin السَيرِthe gait تَحسَبُهُyou would think it إِحدىone of التَصاويرِthe painted figures
After many a sure-footed mount, prancing
As it went—you would take it for a painted figure.
فَقُلتُso I said لاdo not تَعجَبيmarvel مِنّيat me وَمِنand at زَمَنٍan age
أَخنىhas brought ruin عَلَيَّupon me بِتَضييقٍthrough hardship وَتَقتيرِand privation
So I said, “Do not marvel at me, or at an age
That has laid me low with hardship and privation.
بَلrather فَاِعجَبيthen marvel مِنat كِلابٍdogs قَدindeed خَدَمتُهُمُI have served them
تِسعينَninety عاماًyears بِأَشعاريwith my poems وَطُنبوريand my tanbur (lute)
Rather, marvel at dogs whom I have served
For ninety years with my poems and my tanbur.
وَلَمand not يَكُنthere was فيat تَناهيthe height of حالِهِمtheir prosperity بِهُمِamong them
حُرٌّa noble man يَعودُwould bring عَلىupon حاليmy condition بِتَغييرِa change
Yet, at the height of their prosperity, there was not among them
One noble man to bring a change to my plight.”
