Indeed, I was content, instead of pure wine,

with a date drink like agate.

And I was content, instead of eating fine wheat flour,

    to eat dark flour.

And I was content, instead of spacious courtyards,

with a cramped and narrow dwelling.

And I made the dove’s song

    my dwelling at sunrise.

Thus I became Khosrow, master of the

    vaulted hall and refined living.

And I screened myself from the curtain

of misers, men of that path,

who sever, for fear of spending,

    their ties with a friend.
