I see the days assuring me of good fortune,
and yet only after long days.
فَمَنso who ذاthis one ضامِنٌa guarantor لِدَوامِfor the continuance of عُمريmy life
إِلىuntil دَهرٍa time يُغَيِّرُchanges سوءَthe wretchedness of حاليmy condition
Who, then, will guarantee that my life lasts
until a time that changes my wretched state?
هِيَit is التِسعونَthe ninety years قَدalready عَطَفَتbent قَناتيmy spear-shaft

وَنَفَّرتِand drove away الغَوانيthe beautiful women عَنfrom وِصاليintimacy with me
Ninety years have bent my spear-shaft
and driven beautiful women away from intimacy with me.
وَفيهاand in it لَوif عَرَفتُI knew الحَقَّthe truth شُغلٌa distraction

And in those years, if I knew the truth, there is enough to distract me
from the matter that has become my preoccupation.
كَأَنّيas though I بِالنَوادِبِwith the mourning women قائِلاتٍsaying
وَجِسميand my body فَوقَabove أَعناقِthe necks of الرِجالِthe men
I can almost hear the mourning women saying,
with my body above the necks of men:
أَلاah! سُقياًmay rain be granted لِجِسمِكَfor your body كَيفَhow يَبلىit decays
وَذِكرُكَand your memory فيin المَجالِسِthe gatherings غَيرُnot باليfaded
“Ah, may your body be blessed with rain! How can it decay
while your memory in gatherings does not fade?”
