Can any draught taste sweet after Ibn Hamdun?
Does pure drink now cause pain, after the son of Hamdun is gone?
Indeed, the draughts have turned turbid after being clear.
The beverages were muddied, after they had been so clear.
أُصِبناwe were stricken بِهِby his loss فَاِستَأسَدَso it acted like a lion الضَبعُthe hyena بَعدَهُafter him
وَدَبّتand crept إِلَيناtoward us منfrom أُناسٍsome people عَقارِبُscorpions
We were stricken by his loss, and after him the hyena played the lion.
With his loss, the hyena grew bold, and after him
And scorpions crept toward us from some people.
Poisonous desert creatures crept toward us.
وَقُطِّبَand was made to frown وَجهُthe face الدَهرِof Time بَعدَafter وَفاتِهِhis death
فَمِنso from أَيِّwhichever وَجهٍdirection جئتَهُyou came to him فَهوَthen he is قاطِبُfrowning
And Time's face was drawn into a frown after his death;
The face of Time soured after he left us;
So from whatever side you approach him, he is frowning.
From whatever way you approached, its look was grim.
بِمَنthrough whom أَلِجُI enter البابَthe gate الشَديدَformidable حِجابُهُits barrier

Through whom can I enter the tightly guarded gate
With whom can I force open the firmly barred door,
when the processions crowd around it one day?
When the processions crowd against it someday?
بِمَنthrough whom أَبلُغُI reach الغاياتِthe goals أَمor مَنwho بِجاهِهِthrough his influence
أَنالُI obtain وَأَحويand I possess كلَّall ماthat which أَناI طالِبُseeking
Through whom can I reach my goals, or through whose influence
Through whom can I attain the farthest goals? Who, thanks to his fame,
can I obtain and possess all that I seek?
Can acquire for me all I seek?
فَأَصبَحتُso I have become حِلفَa constant companion of البَيتِthe house خَلفَbehind جِدارِهِits wall
وَبِالأَمرِand at the command منّيfrom me يَستَعيذُseek refuge النَجائِبُthe noble camels
So I have become the house's constant companion, behind its wall,
I have become, since his house is bereft,
And at my command, the noble camels seek refuge.
A neighbor to its wall, and the stars seek refuge in me.
