أَحسَنُbetter منthan قَهوَةٍwine مُعَتَّقةٍaged
أَحسَنُ من قَهوَةٍ مُعَتَّقةٍ
تَخالُهافيyou imagine it, in إِنائِهاits vessel ذَهَباgold
تَخالُهافي إِنائِها ذَهَبا
Better than aged wine,
Better than aged coffee,
which you would take for gold in its vessel,
whose essence in its pot is gold,
مِنthan كُلِّevery مَقدودَةٍshapely woman مُنَعَّمَةٍpampered
مِن كُلِّ مَقدودَةٍ مُنَعَّمَةٍ
تَقسِمُapportion فيناamong us أَلحاظُهاher glances الوَصَباsuffering
تَقسِمُ فينا أَلحاظُها الوَصَبا
than any shapely, pampered woman,
from every outstretched, soft palm
whose glances apportion suffering among us,
its glances divide delight among us.
نِعمَةُprosperity قومٍa people أَزالهاswept it away قَدَرٌfate
نِعمَةُ قومٍ أَزالها قَدَرٌ
لَمdid not يَحظَobtain حُرُّa noble man فيهاin it بِماwith what طَلَباhe sought
لَم يَحظَ حُرُّ فيها بِما طَلَبا
is a people's prosperity that fate has swept away,
A people's bounty that destiny removed -
in which no noble man gained what he sought.
no free man obtained from it what he sought.
