لَناwe have صاحِبٌa friend مِنamong أَبرَعthe most skilled الناسِpeople فيin البُخلِmiserliness
وَأَفضَلِهِمand the best of them فيهِat it وَلَيسَand he is not بِذيone possessing فَضلِmerit
We have a friend, among the most skilled of men in miserliness,
and the best of them at it—yet a man of no merit.
دَعانيhe invited me كَماjust as يَدعوinvites الصَديقُa friend صَديقَهُhis friend
فَجِئتُso I came كَماjust as يَأتيcomes إِلىto مِثلِهِone like him مثليone like me
He invited me as a friend invites his friend,
so I came as a man like me comes to a man like him.
فَلَمّاand when جَلَسناwe sat down لِلغَداءِfor lunch رَأَيتُهُI saw him
يَرىhe thinks إِنَّماonly منfrom بَعضِsome of أَعضائِهِhis limbs أَكليmy eating
And when we sat down to lunch, I saw him
thinking I was eating nothing but parts of his own limbs.
وَيَغتاظُand he grows angry أَحياناًsometimes وَيَشتُمُand he curses عَبدَهُhis slave
وَأَعلَمُand I know أَنَّthat الغَيظَthe anger وَالشَتمَand the cursing مِنfor أَجليmy sake
And sometimes he grows angry and curses his slave,
and I know the anger and cursing are on my account.
أَمُدُّI stretch out يَديmy hand سِرّاًsecretly لِآكُلَto eat لُقمَةًa morsel
فَيَلحَظُنيso he eyes me شَزراًaskance فَأَعبَثُso I toy بِالبَقلِwith the greens
I stealthily stretch out my hand to eat a morsel,
then he eyes me askance, so I toy with the greens,
إِلىuntil أَنthat جَنَتcommitted كَفّيmy hand لحينيto my doom جنايَةًan offense
وَذلِكَand that أَنَّbecause الجوعَhunger أَعدَمَنيdeprived me of عَقليmy reason
until my hand committed an offense, to my undoing—
and that was because hunger had robbed me of my wits.
فَأَهوَتso it darted down يَمينيmy right hand نَحوَtoward رِجلِa leg of دَجاجَةٍa hen
فَجَرَّتso it dragged كَماjust as جَرَّتdragged يَديmy hand رِجلَهاits leg رِجليmy leg
So my right hand darted toward a hen's leg,
so, as my hand dragged its leg, it dragged my own leg.
