وَذيand a possessor of جِدَةٍwealth طَلَبتُI asked إِلَيهِof him بِرّاًkindness
وَذي جِدَةٍ طَلَبتُ إِلَيهِ بِرّاً
مِنَamong الجُلَساءِthe companions مَذمومِblameworthy in الخَلائِقcharacter traits
مِنَ الجُلَساءِ مَذمومِ الخَلائِق
And I asked a wealthy man for kindness—
I asked a man of dignity for some kindness
One of the companions, of blameworthy character.
From those sitting whose morals are reproachable
فَأَقسَمَso he swore إِنَّهُthat he رَجُلٌa man فَقيرٌpoor
فَأَقسَمَ إِنَّهُ رَجُلٌ فَقيرٌ
أَرانيهِmay He show him to me المُهَيمِنُthe Guardian وَهوَand he is صادِقtruthful
أَرانيهِ المُهَيمِنُ وَهوَ صادِق
So he swore that he was a poor man.
He swore he was a poor man
May the Guardian show him to me telling the truth!
The Overseer showed me he was truthful
كَأَنّيas though I بِالمَنازِلِwith the houses before me عَنafter قَليلٍa short while
كَأَنّي بِالمَنازِلِ عَن قَليلٍ
خَلَونَthey stood empty مِنَof المُطَرَّزَةِthe embroidered النَمارِقthe cushions
خَلَونَ مِنَ المُطَرَّزَةِ النَمارِق
I can almost see the houses, before long,
It's as if I see dwellings after a little while
Standing empty of the embroidered cushions;
Empty of embroidered carpets
وَقَدand indeed ظَفِرَgained possession النِساءُthe women بِماof what تَرَكتُمyou (plural) left behind
وَقَد ظَفِرَ النِساءُ بِما تَرَكتُم
فَصارَso it became لِماهِرٍa skilled man's بِالنَيكِat fucking حاذِقadept
فَصارَ لِماهِرٍ بِالنَيكِ حاذِق
And the women have gained what you left behind,
And women got what you left behind
So it passed to a skilled man, adept at fucking.
So what a skilled embroiderer made became theirs
