صَديقٌa friend ليof mine لَهُhe has أَدَبُrefinement
صَديقٌ لي لَهُ أَدَبُ
صَداقَةُfriendship مِثلِهِwith one like him حَسَبُhonor
صَداقَةُ مِثلِهِ حَسَبُ
A friend of mine possesses refinement.
A friend of mine, of impeccable manners
Friendship with one like him is an honor.
His friendship suffices me, nothing else matters
رَعىshowed care ليfor me فَوقَbeyond ماwhat يُرعىis cared for
رَعى لي فَوقَ ما يُرعى
وَأَوجَبَand undertook obligations فَوقَbeyond ماwhat يَجِبُis obligatory
وَأَوجَبَ فَوقَ ما يَجِبُ
He has shown me care beyond what is expected,
He cares for me beyond duty's demands
and undertaken more than duty requires.
And gives beyond what custom commands
وَلَوand if نُقِدَتwere assayed خَلائِقُهُhis virtues
وَلَو نُقِدَت خَلائِقُهُ
لَبُهرِجَwould be deemed counterfeit عِندَهاbeside them الذَهَبُgold
لَبُهرِجَ عِندَها الذَهَبُ
And if his virtues were assayed,
Were his nature assayed and judged
gold would be deemed counterfeit beside them.
Gold would seem but worthless fudge
