May rain and care bless the monastery of al-Zindaward and all
Watered and grazed in the monastery of Zindaward
it holds and gathers of wine and sweet basil.
And what it contains and gathers of comfort and basil,
دَيرٌa monastery تَدورُcirculate بِهِwithin it الأَقداحُthe cups مُتَرَعَةًbrimming
مِنfrom كَفِّthe hand of ساقٍa cupbearer مَريضِlanguid الطَرفِthe gaze وَسنانِdrowsy
A monastery where brimming cups go round,
A monastery where cups are passed around inebriated
from the hand of a drowsy, languid-eyed cupbearer.
From the palm of a sickly, weak-eyed, toothless man,
وَالعودُand the lute يَتبَعُهُfollows it نايٌa flute يَوافِقُهُharmonizes with it
وَالشَدوُand the singing يَحكِمُهُperforms it expertly غُصنٌa bough مِنَof البانِthe ban tree
And the lute is followed by a flute that harmonizes with it,
The lute accompanies the flute harmoniously,
and a bough of the ban tree performs the singing with skill.
As the melody is perfected by a twig of ebony,
وَالقَومُand the company فَوضىin disarray تَرىyou see هَذاthis one يُقَبِّلَkisses ذاthis one
وَذاكَand that one إِنسانُa man of سوءٍwickedness فَوقَatop إِنسانِa man
And the company is in disarray: you see this one kissing that one,
And the people are chaos, you see this one kissing that one,
and that one, a wicked man, atop another man.
And that man is an evil man over another man,
هَذاthis وَدِجَلَةُand the Tigris لِلرائينَto onlookers مُعرِضَةٌin full view
وَالطَيرُand the birds يَدعوcall هَديلاًcooing بَينَamong أَغصانِbranches
All this, while the Tigris lies in full view of onlookers,
This while the Tigris is presented to viewers
and the birds call, cooing among the branches.
And birds call out between branches,
بَرٌّland وَبَحرٌand a river فَصَيدُso the game of البَرِّthe land مُقتَرِبٌclose at hand
وَالبَحرُand the river يَسبَحُswim شَطّاهُits two banks بِحيتانِwith fish
Land and river: the game on land is close at hand,
Land and sea, the land’s game is nearby
and the river's two banks swim with fish.
And the sea swims its banks with whales.
