You who combine wealth with want, be gentle.

The one who hoards wealth and stinginess

Yours is a state of contradiction that brings shame.

Your state is one of contradiction and shame

تشتهي النفسُ من حلال بحوزي

تشتهي النفسُ من حلال بحوزي

What honor is there unless everything

What glory is there if everything

lawful that the soul desires is in my possession?

My soul desires isn't within my possession

كيف أحيا وعندي المالُ محروماً

كيف أحيا وعندي المالُ محروماً

وأمشى ما بين غمزٍ ولمز

وأمشى ما بين غمزٍ ولمز

How can I live deprived when I have wealth,

How can I live when wealth avoids me

and walk amid mocking winks and taunts?

And I walk between winks and taunts

رب شيءٍ إن أحرم النفس منه

رب شيءٍ إن أحرم النفس منه

وهو طوعى يكن نصيب المعزى

وهو طوعى يكن نصيب المعزى

Many a thing, if I deny it to my soul,

Many things that deprive the soul

though it is at my command, will be the consoler's share.

If willingly given, bring honor

أي معنى للمال لا حول البخل

أي معنى للمال لا حول البخل

ولا جمل الحياة بعز

ولا جمل الحياة بعز

What use is wealth that has neither changed miserliness

What meaning is there to wealth without generosity

nor adorned life with honor?

A life without dignity or honor

قد كفانا البخيلُ ندعو عليه

قد كفانا البخيلُ ندعو عليه

فهو في حالة من النفس تجزى

فهو في حالة من النفس تجزى

The miser has spared us the need to pray against him,

We've had enough of the miser, we curse him

for the state of his soul punishes him.

For he is in a state his soul deserves
