Those hearts are wronged; they are hurt

In their inclinations by reproachers and lovers.

Since Adam's time, they have seen no fair-minded judge,

Independent in judgment—and the pages bear witness.

No taste within them is borrowed, for through

Imitation of others, tastes are debased.

How often they have rebuked them for love, though they know

Their limits: they cannot bear to forget.

How often they have made them bear love's consequences,

And God knows that such is hypocrisy.

By God, what fault have hearts, whose core

Throbs whenever a creature's beauty appears?

Was their throbbing with ardent love a sin,

When the Creator ordained that throbbing for them?

If there were a way around the provision decreed,

They would devise one—but such are the allotted shares.

As for the eyes, what is their fault?

Beauty appears, and the pupils trace it.

And the mind conveys it to the hearts, made ready

Within us so that longings may do their work.

If they were fair, they would accuse beauty, for it

Has bewitched the hearts and is a thief by nature.
