أحبI love سمنودSamannud لاnot للغنىfor wealth
أصبتُI have gained ولكنand yet لبرىfor my devotion بهاto her
I love Samannud, not for the wealth
I love Samannoud, not for its wealth
I have gained, but for my devotion to her.
I have fallen, but out of love for it
بهاin her قدindeed ولدتI was born وفيهاand in her شببتُI grew up
وعليand perhaps I سأدفنI shall be buried فيin تربهاher soil
In her I was born, and in her I grew up.
In it I was born and grew up
And perhaps I shall be buried in her soil.
And in its soil I will be buried
وغذيتand I nurtured فيهاin her الهوىlove والشبابand youth
وملأتand I filled قلبيmy heart منfrom عذبهاher sweetness
And there I nurtured love and youth,
I nurtured passion and youth in it
And filled my heart with her sweetness.
And filled my heart with its sweetness
وصحبيand my companions فيهاin her علىdespite عيبهمtheir faults
فعودتso I accustomed نفسself علىto عيبهاher faults
And my companions are there, despite their faults,
And kept company with its people, faults and all
So I accustomed myself to her faults.
So my soul grew used to their faults
نودwe cherish الغريبthe stranger وتجفوand she shuns القريبthe near one
وليستand she is not تساويshe treats equally فيin حدبهاher care
We cherish the stranger, while she shuns the one close to her,
The stranger pines, while the neighbor shuns
And she is not even-handed in her care.
And they are not equal in their hump
ولكنand yet أذاهاharming her حرامٌforbidden علىto me
وحسبيand enough for me المخافةfear منof ربهاher Lord
Yet harming her is forbidden to me,
But to hurt it is forbidden me
And fear of her Lord is enough for me.
It suffices that I fear its Lord
