تستمتعان بما ليس ملكي
Beauty dawned, and so I loosed my eyes
Beauty appeared, so I turned my eyes toward it;
to delight in what is not mine.
They delight in what is not mine.

على ما ضننت به فهي تبكي
Your beauty exacted the prescribed penalty upon the eyes
Your beauty imposed a penalty on the eyes
for what I had imagined of it; and so they weep.
For what you withheld, and so they weep.

So I chose to steal glances

At you, when I succeeded in being near you,

وان عاش قلبي حليف التشكي
eager to preserve affection as long as I live,
Keen on affection for as long as I live,
though my heart should live as lament’s constant companion.
And though my heart lives in league with lament.

فيشغلني ما أحيلاه عنك
You come, with yearning in my heart,
You come, with a blaze in my heart,
and what I turn away from you preoccupies me.
So it distracts me—how sweet it is!—from you.

This beauty of yours is a miser’s wealth,
This beauty of yours is a miser's wealth,
while his neighbor is in torment and distress.
And a neighbor of his is in torment and hardship.

The alms due on your beauty is to let the eyes
The alms due on your beauty are to let the eyes
behold it, and thus the almsgiver’s wealth increases.
See it, so the almsgiver's wealth increases.

Otherwise, do not display it to me,
Otherwise, do not show it to me,
even if solace—and my leaving—were an illusion.
Even if my solace and my letting go are an illusion.
