O spreading tree above my grave, do not shade me;
O tree above my grave, give me no shade
Rather, its ample shade is for my visitors.
Rather, its shade is for my visitors

What does a body gain as it decays,
What happens to a body as it decays
Hidden beneath graves and stones?
Buried below soil and stones?

Do you think a friend will visit, one to whom I used to give
Will a friend visit whom I used to give
My love, and offer God's shade in my home?
My affection and first choice of abode?

Or is it the way of the living that, when they bury
Or is it human nature that when buried
A dead man, friends and neighbors put him out of mind?
The thoughts of friends and neighbours forget the deceased?

Then let my friend forget me, for God remembers me;
So let my companion forget me, for God remembers me
And for His sake I was sincere in public and in secret.
And to Him I devoted my declarations and secrets

And I do not absolve myself today of minor sins,
And I do not acquit myself today of blames
But I have turned back to the Oft-Forgiving, the Concealer of faults.
But I returned to a Forgiving and Veiling God

My faithful counselor, my tree, then tell me news
My dear tree, then remember the news
Of those I left behind, to whom news of me no longer comes.
Of those I left behind whose news escaped me

And welcome the birds as kin; perhaps among them
And receive the birds - maybe among the tribe
Is a dove whose song comes from the song of my poems.
A pigeon will squawk with my poetry's tune

She sheltered for a time in the tower I had prepared,
It came to the tower I'd prepared it for sometime
And I counted her among my best evening companions.
Thinking it was among the best of my catch

I gave her grain from my palm to peck at,
I gave it love from my palms to peck
And from my mouth she sipped water with her beak.
And from my mouth I whistled water into its beak

For the soul is one, whether in birds or in people;
The soul in birds or men is one
I am content with it, if I gain from it a token of remembrance.
I am inspired if I gain any recollection from it

Here we abide until the day on which we pass
Either enter Heaven or Hell
Either to Paradise or to Hellfire.
