الخير بالخير فعلا

الخير بالخير فعلا

وبادئُ الخير أكرم

وبادئُ الخير أكرم

Good is repaid with good, indeed;

and the first to do good is nobler.

والشر بالشر عدلا

والشر بالشر عدلا

وبادئ الشر أظلم

وبادئ الشر أظلم

And evil with evil, in justice;

and the first to do evil is more unjust.

وإن يك العفو أولى

وإن يك العفو أولى

لكن بشرط مقدم

لكن بشرط مقدم

And though forgiveness may be preferable,

yet with a condition laid down beforehand:

فلو تعدى ضعيف

فلو تعدى ضعيف

عليك فالعفو ألزم

عليك فالعفو ألزم

for if a weak person transgresses

against you, forgiveness is more binding;

ولو تعدى عنيف

ولو تعدى عنيف

ولم تقاومه تندم

ولم تقاومه تندم

and if a violent person transgresses,

and you do not resist him, you will regret it.
