عرض الجمالُ على أروع منظرٍ
يهوىis drawn اليهtoward it الناظرُthe beholder المتغزلُthe amorous one
يهوى اليه الناظرُ المتغزلُ
Beauty was displayed in a most splendid scene,
Beauty's splendor draws the admiring gaze
Toward which the amorous beholder is drawn.
Of the besotted gazer, enthralled
وتشابهتand looked alike غُرُّthe radiant ones الثيابthe garments فلمso did not امزI distinguish
وتشابهت غُرُّ الثياب فلم امز
منwho كانwas مفضولاًinferior ولاnor منwho يفضلُexcels
من كان مفضولاً ولا من يفضلُ
And the brightly clad looked alike, so I could not tell
The raiment was of like elegance, I could not tell
Who was inferior, nor who excelled.
Who was more or less exalted
والقلبُand the heart فيin طلبseeking الجمالbeauty مفزعٌfrightened
والقلبُ في طلب الجمال مفزعٌ
لمdid not يدرknow فيregarding المعروضwhat was displayed ماذاwhat يعملُdo
لم يدر في المعروض ماذا يعملُ
And the heart, in its quest for beauty, is frightened;
The heart seeking beauty takes refuge
It did not know what to do with what was on display.
Unsure amid the parade what to do
لاdoes not يستقرsettle علىon جميلٍa beautiful one ناظريmy gaze
لا يستقر على جميلٍ ناظري
إلاexcept وينقلهand shifts it لماto what هوit is أجملُmore beautiful
إلا وينقله لما هو أجملُ
My gaze never settles on a beautiful one
My eyes cannot settle on one beauty
Without being drawn to what is more beautiful.
Without shifting to one yet more beautiful
فالقلبُso the heart يخلصescapes منfrom فتونthe enchantment كليهماboth of them
فالقلبُ يخلص من فتون كليهما
ويعودand returns ينقلهcarries it away الحبيبthe beloved الأولُthe first
ويعود ينقله الحبيب الأولُ
So the heart escapes the enchantment of them both,
The heart escapes the passions of both
And the first beloved once more carries it away,
Returning to the first beloved
حيثwhere الأمانُsafety فلاso there is no رقيبwatcher ولاand no دوىclamor
حيث الأمانُ فلا رقيب ولا دوى
ومتىand whenever بعثتI sent اليهto him بادرhe hastened يمثلُhe appears
ومتى بعثت اليه بادر يمثلُ
Where safety lies, with no watcher and no clamor.
Where there is safety, no watcher, no echo
And whenever I send for him, he hastens to appear.
When you call him, he comes immediately
يفضىhe confides لدىto me بماof what لديهhe has منof الهوىlove
يفضى لدى بما لديه من الهوى
شيئاًsomething معwith الأعوامthe years لاdoes not يتبدلchange
شيئاً مع الأعوام لا يتبدل
He confides to me the love he holds,
He unburdens to me his undying love
Something that does not change with the years.
Unchanging throughout the years
إياكbeware تجربةtesting القلوبhearts فطالماfor often
إياك تجربة القلوب فطالما
هيthey بينamong أشتاتِscattered varieties الهوىlove تتنقلُwander
هي بين أشتاتِ الهوى تتنقلُ
Beware of testing hearts, for often
Do not test hearts, for long have they
They wander among love's scattered varieties.
Wandered among scattered passions
وإذاand if ظفرتyou win منamong القلوبhearts بواحدٍa single one
وإذا ظفرت من القلوب بواحدٍ
حرٍّnoble فحسبكَthen enough for you منهfrom it ألاthat ... not يتحولchange
حرٍّ فحسبكَ منه ألا يتحول
And if, among hearts, you win one
If you find a heart free and unclaimed
That is noble, be content that it does not change.
It suffices if it does not change
