The heart is wronged by passion,

and the soul is guilty of sins.

    Yet without guilt

it is never seen, and it has flaws.

And the heart is a beating body,

harmed by the soul, yet never repenting.

    Indeed, hearts are weak,

and the soul is grasping and rapacious.

If I were a butcher selling

meat, I would not sell hearts.

    اكذا تناوشها الغيوب

    So life has torment enough of its own;

is this how unseen things assail it?
