O you who live in luxury through wealth and keep two co-wives!

You find in them not a wife, but two slave-women.

They are wives in your palace, but married to silver.

If you speak to one of them, you are pelted with lies.

And whenever she speaks to you, she is neither here nor there.

They flatter you as long as there is pure gold in your hands.

And if one day you fall into poverty, you say, 'O grandfather of al-Husayn!'

Has sorcery struck the house, I wonder, or is it the evil eye?

Those two are chameleons, even if they have made you witness Badr and Hunayn.

Those two are speckled snakes that have made you drink the venom of two vipers.

The money is gone, so we have given you ugliness in place of beauty.

The house sees no peace as long as it holds two wives.

And when they grow old, you will be the adversary between the two factions.

And when you die, you will have left offspring—two armies.
