You mortally wounded a proud man, heedlessly and without adornment.

Heal him for the graceful maidens, or crush him for the hunt.

You shot—I knew not what you meant; so apologize,

O graceful maiden who has shot without taking aim.

In a blink of the eye lies what can bring about

the capture of hearts; so leave the quarry alone, or hunt.

Before love poetry reaches its climax

and the ardent lover perishes between earnestness and the neck.

A neck of polished marble, adorned

by the magic of necklaces upon it, without knotting.

How long and lofty the neck of a fair, unadorned woman!

Its page was lovely without embellishment.

What does it profit you—unless you intend ruin—

to keep a disappointed lover preoccupied and sleepless?

Let him enjoy a life grown sweet through forgetting,

unaware of the beauty of shy, graceful maidens.

Or draw him near to gain love's reward: fruit

from what you possess, without fetters or restraint.

    If your rejection is coquetry, then send hope;

after that, be sparing with coquetry, or increase it.

Had fortune favored you, you would have met a lovesick man

who would live with you forever in the joy of a feast-day.

And whatever he possesses stands pledged on his honor,

and everything he owns goes to waste.

Have the maidens of the jinn taught you what has defeated

healing incantations among your scattered victims?

To you I surrendered my heart, forgetting my stratagems,

offering my allegiance on behalf of every drunken reveler.

So ascend to your cherished throne, and listen

to the heart's supplication in the most plaintive of my songs.
