يوما بمحكمة لقاضٍ راشد
The thief and the man robbed came forward
The thief and the stolen from came one day
One day in court before a wise judge.
Before an upright judge's court to plead their case
ماnot كانwas إلاexcept أنthat تفرسhe looked closely فيهماat the two of them
ما كان إلا أن تفرس فيهما
حتىuntil تنحىhe stepped aside فيin أسىsorrow المتباعدthe one keeping his distance
حتى تنحى في أسى المتباعد
No sooner had he looked closely at them both
No sooner did he look upon the two
Than he stepped aside, sorrowfully keeping his distance.
Then he turned away in sorrowful dismay
عجبmarveled الشهودthe witnesses لهat him فقالso he said رويدكمbe patient, all of you
عجب الشهود له فقال رويدكم
كناwe were ثلاثتناall three of us بفصلin a class واحدone
كنا ثلاثتنا بفصل واحد
The witnesses marveled at him, so he said, “Be patient—
The witnesses were puzzled by his act
All three of us were in the same class.”
"We three," he said, "once shared a common fate."
