The air is pure; no building keeps it
The air is pure, unobstructed by any building
from me, nor is there nourishment in anything else.
Neither distracting me, nor providing sustenance besides it

It is the best thing to nourish and revive the weary;
It is the best sustenance, invigorating the toiler
in it is a gift from the generous sea.
With generous gifts from the benevolent sea

In a place where, in summer, no easterly wind
In a spot where, in summer, neither easterly winds

فيطيب لي عن جانبي الأصفاء
And the water's waves roar beside me,
And the water beats against the sides of its waves
so it pleases me in place of dear friends at my side.
Leaving the surroundings serenely still

In Port Said, though it makes me feel
aboard ships rocked by the air.
As if on a ship tossed by the weather

But for the earth I felt beneath me, I would be surrounded
If not for the ground beneath me, I'd think
by water and sky appearing in my mind.
Myself surrounded by water and sky

And I imagined, over the years, that in fact

The names differed, though the exile was one

Noon comes; its meal does not tempt
Midday comes, but its meal does not tempt
my soul, for I have nourishment in the breeze,
My soul - for me, the breeze itself is food

وأنام لم يطرح على غطاء
I eat the appetizing food eagerly,
I hungrily devour the delicious meal
and sleep with no cover laid over me.
And sleep without need of a cover

I rise feeling vigorous, my limbs sensing
and my limbs feel strength's might.
Their strength return, and ready to continue
