فغَدا كالِحَ الجَوانِبِ قَفرا
The water of modesty has ebbed from every face,
The waters of modesty have receded from every face,
So it has become grim on every side, a barren waste.
Leaving the sides as barren as deserts.

And ingratitude has spread among people, until
Disrespect spread among people until
Returning a greeting is almost reckoned kindness.
Returning greetings was considered a good deed.

Faces—as though you had strewn upon the
Faces, that if you sprinkled roses on graves,
Graves roses—if they display cheer.
Would still frown with no good to say.

Lips that say "Welcome," yet if left to their own devices,
What lies in the heart, they would say nothing good.
Would say nothing decent or kind.

I adjure you by God: is that a greeting of affection,
May God lengthen your life! Is this a greeting of affection?
Or did the greeter have some purpose in mind?
Or did the greeter attempt something more?

Have they gone blind to their path, or feigned blindness—
Nations wandered blindly through the wilds of ignorance.
Nations bewildered in the wastes of ignorance?

Their good fortune deceived them; yet fortune is wont
They subjected the peoples and raided the countries,
To favor for a day and forsake for an age.

They forgot on the rise the day of decline,
One raid after another throughout the lands.
Though decline entices those rising swiftly.

In their ascent, they forgot the day of descent,
The philosopher wearied of people for an era,
And descent is drawn to those whose fortune rises.
While spirituality shunned them for an era.

The philosopher toiled among people for an age,
The people pursue each other.
And religion governed their innermost thoughts for an age.
A hawk by night is pursued at dawn.
