O you who fill the eye with light and the heart with love,
O you who fill the eye with light and the heart with love,
and the home with companionship—tarry, O moon!
And the house with comfort—linger, O moon.

Do not leave your horizon empty, lest darkness replace you there;
Do not leave your horizon empty, lest darkness replace you there;
stay where you are, lest sorrow settle there.
And keep your place, lest sorrow settle there.
فيin الحيِّthe neighborhood قَلبانِtwo hearts باتاthey both spent the night ياO نَعيمَهماtheir delight
في الحيِّ قَلبانِ باتا يا نَعيمَهما

وَفيهما إذ قَضَيتَ النارُ تَستَعِرُ
In the neighborhood two hearts spent the night—oh, the bliss they shared!
In the neighborhood, two hearts have spent the night, O their delight,
And now that you have died, a fire blazes within them both.
And within them, since you died, fire blazes.

Four eyes weep for you in grief,
And four eyes weep for you in sorrow,
and from the weeping of the bereaved come the torrent and the rain.
And from the weeping of the bereaved come torrent and rain.
قدindeed كنتَyou were رَيحانَةًa sprig of basil فيin البَيتِthe house واحدَةًa single one

You were the home's one sprig of sweet basil,
You were the only sprig of basil in the house,
whose fragrant breath wafted through it evening and morning.
Its sweet scent wafted through it, evening and morning.

في ذِمَّةِ القَبر بعدَ اللَهِ يا عُمَرُ
Go, then, as grief-stricken souls escort you
So depart, with souls escorting you in anguish,
into the grave's keeping, after God's, O ʿUmar.
In the grave's keeping, after God's, O Umar.
