    O flash of lightning, how much sorrow you have awakened

    In ribs that had forgotten their ailment for a while!

    قد حارَ بينَهُما أمرُ المُحِبّينا

    So water is in eyes, and fire in hearts;

    Between the two, the lovers are left bewildered.

    Were it not for remembering our bygone days,

    Our weeper would not spend the night weeping blood among the clan.

    O my loved ones, return—may I never lose you!

    And witness—alas for you!—what separation has done to us.

    O breeze whose skirts were perfumed before dawn

    By the blossoms of Andalus, blow through our valley!
