كَلامُكماyour words (you two) إنif كانare مِثلَlike سهامِarrows
فَقَلبيَthen my heart حِصنٌa fortress لاnot يَلينyields لِراميto an archer
If the words of you both are like arrows,
Your words, if they are like arrows
then my heart is a fortress that yields to no archer.
My heart is a fortress that does not weaken for an archer
إِذاif رُمتُماyou both seek قَتلىmy slaying بِغيرِwithout لواحظٍglances
دَعانيleave me, you two فدونfor before القصدthe goal طولُlength صِدامconflict
If you both seek to kill me without glances,
If you shoot me dead without noticing
leave me, for a long struggle lies before that goal.
Distance called me, the length of the conflict
وَإنand if رُمتماyou both seek ليfor me بِالمَلامِthrough reproach سَلامةًsafety
أَرِفقُكُماdoes your gentleness (you two) يُرضىappease صِيالَthe onslaught حُساميmy sword
And if through reproach you seek my safety,
And if you shoot me gently in reproach
would your gentleness appease my sword's fury?
I will be gentle with you, content with my sword
بِروحيwith my soul الذيthe one whom لَولاwere it not that أَغارُI am jealous منof الصَباthe east wind

My soul be his ransom—were I not jealous of the east wind
By my soul, if not for my jealousy over youth
over him, I would not have withheld my greeting from him.
I would not have delayed my peace from him

أَدرناwe passed around بهin it لِلأُنسِfor fellowship غُرَّةَthe bright brow جامa goblet
And may rain bless an age white-stockinged with hopes,
And a drinker in a time adorned with wishes
in which, for fellowship, we passed round a goblet's bright brow.
We knew through it for company the prime of the cup
فَياso, O زمناًtime ماnot خِلتُهI deemed it غيرَother than سَكرةٍa drunken spell
مُضيُّكَyour passing أَبقىleft ليfor me خُمارَthe hangover غرامِlove
So, O time I deemed nothing but a drunken spell,
So oh time, I have known you only as intoxication
your passing left me the hangover of love.
Your passing remains for me the wine of passion
إِلامَhow long أُقاسيI endure ماwhat أُقاسيI endure منfrom الجَوىlove's anguish
وَمنand from معشرٍa people هامواthey became infatuated بِتَركِwith ending هياميmy infatuation
How long must I endure all I endure from love's anguish,
Why should I suffer what I suffer from love
and from people infatuated with ending my infatuation?
And from a group that craved to leave my passion
