Give up your shunning and desertion,
Let go of your rejection and abandonment of me
And quench my flame and longing.
And extinguish my passion and longing
ساعةan hour وصالكunion with you وأربكand nearness to you
ساعة وصالك وأربك
أغلىdearer منthan العمرlife عنديto me
أغلى من العمر عندي
An hour of union with you and nearness to you
The moment of our union and intimacy
Is dearer to me than life.
Is more precious to me than life
بصدّيwith spurning me إنتمyou (plural) رضيتمyou were content
بصدّي إنتم رضيتم
وهانand mattered little عليكُمto you (plural) بعاديmy absence
وهان عليكُم بعادي
You were content to spurn me,
With your rejection, you are content
And my absence mattered little to you,
And my separation means nothing to you
واِنتمand you (plural) اطلَعتمyou learned of وداديmy love
واِنتم اطلَعتم ودادي
اللَهGod يصبّرmay He give patience to فؤاديmy heart
اللَه يصبّر فؤادي
Though you knew my love.
Yet you know my affection
May God give my heart patience.
May God give patience to my heart
ياO نرجسnarcissus الروضthe garden مالكwhat is the matter with you?
يا نرجس الروض مالك
سلّطتyou directed لحظكyour glance عليّupon me
سلّطت لحظك عليّ
O narcissus of the garden, why have you
O narcissus of the garden, what is wrong with you?
Turned your glance upon me?
You have unleashed your gaze upon me
اللّيwhat كوانيseared me جمالكyour beauty
اللّي كواني جمالك
لكنbut سببهاits cause عنّيfrom me
لكن سببها عنّي
What seared me was your beauty,
The one who was my beauty
But I am the cause of it.
Yet the reason is beyond me
حنّيdye with henna إديكyour hands منfrom دموعيmy tears
حنّي إديك من دموعي
واِرسمand draw عليهمon them أساورbracelets
واِرسم عليهم أساور
Henna your hands with my tears,
Shed for me these tears
And draw bracelets on them.
And draw on them bracelets
وإنand if كنتyou are خايفafraid of عذوليmy reproacher
وإن كنت خايف عذولي
أرخيlet down شعوركyour hair ستايرcurtains
أرخي شعورك ستاير
And if you fear my reproacher,
And if you fear my madness
Let down your hair as curtains.
Let down your hair as a veil
لاِجلكfor your sake هجرنيforsook me مناميmy sleep
لاِجلك هجرني منامي
وفيكand for you جفيتI shunned كلevery صاحبfriend
وفيك جفيت كل صاحب
For your sake, my sleep has forsaken me,
For you, sleep has abandoned me
And for you I have shunned every friend.
And for you, I have forsaken all friends
ولاِجلand for the sake of اربكnearness to you ووصلِكand union with you
ولاِجل اربك ووصلِك
صاحبتI befriended غيرother than الحبايبthe loved ones
صاحبت غير الحبايب
And for the sake of nearness and union with you,
And for the sake of your confusion and connection
I have befriended those who are not dear to me.
I have befriended none but the estranged
