Indeed, from the nights’ udders comes murk,

even if they show you a radiant sight.

So be on guard against what they beguile you with,

if caution can avail against their treacheries.

The nights have made you hear, through their events,

what holds your guidance, yet you take no heed.

If yours is an ear that does not heed,

tell me, by your life, what good are lessons?

Time has—if you knew the terror of its speech—

an admonition that evenings and mornings repeat.

O you beguiled by your world and its glitter,

by God, delusion will soon bring you to ruin.

And you who pride yourself on beauty whose appearance charms,

this alluring grace and soft down are for the grave—alas for you!

You love life and refuse to part with it,

like one seeking to reach water without ever departing.

Everyone is bound for a grave,

even if life lengthens the reach of his hopes.

After Abdullah has died, held captive

beneath the soil, can serenity be hoped for or awaited?

Alas for him whom they laid in the grave! Did they know

that noble virtues were part of what they buried?

They have hidden away a noble man whose merits

Time would invoke in apology whenever it stumbled.

And they left desolate the halls in learning’s abodes,

which gloried in his eminence on the day of boasting.

He passed on, leaving among us, of his excellences,

marvels that ear and eye behold.

It is to the chagrin of lofty honors, O their true master,

that the days and their reversals have hidden you away.

Souls would ransom your precious life,

if harm could be warded off from it by ransom.

The darkness of ignorance grew pitch-black

when the moon vanished from our horizons.

O eye, pour out streaming tears for

him who was a treasure kept against Time’s misfortunes.

Or ask God for solace and patient endurance,

if solace and patient endurance can be fitting.
