هيَ الدُنيا وَإن جادَت بِخيلَه

هيَ الدُنيا وَإن جادَت بِخيلَه

يَدُ الحِرمانِ في يَدِها المُنيلَه

يَدُ الحِرمانِ في يَدِها المُنيلَه

Such is the world: miserly even when it gives.

The hand of deprivation lies within its giving hand.

سواءٌ مَن يَعيشُ الأَلفَ فيها

سواءٌ مَن يَعيشُ الأَلفَ فيها

ومن أَيّامُه قَليلَه

ومن أَيّامُه قَليلَه

Alike are those who live a thousand years in it,

And those whose days are few.

لَئِن قَصُرَت بِمَن تَهوى اللَيالي

لَئِن قَصُرَت بِمَن تَهوى اللَيالي

فَإنَّ فُتوحَ والِدها طويلَه

فَإنَّ فُتوحَ والِدها طويلَه

Though the nights were short for the one you love,

Her father's triumphs are long-lasting.

أَأُستاذَ المؤَيَّدِ هل أُعَزّى

أَأُستاذَ المؤَيَّدِ هل أُعَزّى

فَجُهدي اليَوم تَعزِيَةٌ جَميلَه

فَجُهدي اليَوم تَعزِيَةٌ جَميلَه

O master of Al-Mu'ayyad, shall I offer consolation?

For all I can offer today is gracious consolation.

فَما في لَوعَةِ الآباءِ شكٌّ

فَما في لَوعَةِ الآباءِ شكٌّ

ولا في ذاهبِ الأَبناءِ حيلَه

ولا في ذاهبِ الأَبناءِ حيلَه

For there is no doubting fathers' anguish,

Nor any remedy for the loss of children.

وَأنت المرءُ إن أخطاكَ نَسلٌ

وَأنت المرءُ إن أخطاكَ نَسلٌ

فَنَسلُكَ بَينَنا الخِدمُ الجَليلَه

فَنَسلُكَ بَينَنا الخِدمُ الجَليلَه

And you are a man who, should offspring elude you,

Has noble services for offspring among us.

تَمنّاكَ النُجومُ أَباً وَتَأبى

تَمنّاكَ النُجومُ أَباً وَتَأبى

شَريكاً في أُبُوَّتِكَ الفَضيلَه

شَريكاً في أُبُوَّتِكَ الفَضيلَه

The stars have longed for you as a father; yet unwilling

To share you as a father is Virtue.
