We spend the night building towers out of wishes,

and shore them up, but day tears them down.

Then it laughs, mocking us as we stand

    upon their ruins—the revolving heavens.

Let us be done with drinking deep of wishes:

a hangover of madness follows them throughout life.

For how many a far-off goal they have brought near,

short of which mighty ambitions stumble!

And how many a lofty goal they have offered—

and short arms have stretched their palms toward it!
