ياO رَبِّmy Lord أينَwhere تُرىI wonder تُقامُwill be set up جهَنَّمُHell
لِلظالِمينfor the wrongdoers غداًtomorrow وَلِلأَشرارِand for the wicked
O my Lord, where, I wonder, will Hell be set up
for the wrongdoers tomorrow, and for the wicked?
لمdid not يُبقِleave عفوكَYour pardon فيin السَمواتِthe heavens العُلاthe lofty
وَالأَرضِand the earth شبراًa handspan خالِياًvacant لِلنّارِfor the Fire
Your pardon has not left in the heavens on high
or on earth a handspan vacant for the Fire.
ياO ربِّmy Lord أَهِّلنيmake me worthy لِفَضلِكَof Your grace واكفِنيand spare me
شَطَطَthe excesses of العُقولِminds وَفِتنةَand the temptation of الأَفكارthoughts
O my Lord, make me worthy of Your grace, and spare me
the excesses of reason and the temptations of thought.
وَمُرand command الوجودَexistence يَشِفُّto become transparent عنكَto reveal You لكيso that أَرىI may see
غَضَبَthe wrath of اللَطيفِthe Gentle One وَرحمَةَand the mercy of الجَبّارِthe Compeller
And bid existence grow transparent to reveal You, that I may see
the wrath of the Gentle One and the mercy of the Compeller.
ياO عالِمَKnower of الأَسرارِsecrets حَسبيenough for me مِحنَةًan ordeal
عِلميmy knowledge بِأَنَّكَthat You are عالمُthe Knower of الأَسرارsecrets
O Knower of secrets, it is trial enough for me
to know that You are the Knower of secrets.
أَخلِقhow fitting بِرَحمَتِكَfor Your mercy التيwhich تَسعُembraces الوَرىall creation
أَلّاthat it not تَضيقَbe too narrow بِأَعظَمِfor the greatest الأَوزارِburdens of sin
How fitting that Your mercy, which embraces all creation,
should not be too narrow for the greatest burdens of sin.

on Resurrection Day from the hand of the All-Subduing.
لَيسَis not الكريمُthe Generous One بِطالِبٍone who seeks عنin return for صُنعِهHis kindness
أَجراًa reward وَليسَnor is العَفوُpardon صفقَةَa bargain شاريa buyer
The Generous One does not seek, in return for His kindness,
a reward; nor is pardon a buyer's bargain.
