ياO سَرحَةًa tree بجوارbeside الماءِthe water ناضِرةًverdant
سَقاكِmay it water you دمعيmy tears إذاif لمnot يوفِprovide enough ساقيكِyour waterer
O verdant sarḥa tree beside the water,
O verdant tree beside the water,
may my tears water you if your waterer fails you.
May my tears water you if your waterer falls short.
عارٌa disgrace عَلَيكِupon you وَهذاwhile this الظِلُّthe shade مُنتَشِرٌspread out
فتكُravaging الهَجيرthe midday heat بِمِثليof one like me فيin نَواحيكِyour vicinity
Shame on you, with all this shade spread wide,
It is a disgrace to you, while this shade spreads wide,
to leave one like me stifled by noon heat within your bounds.
For the midday heat to ravage one like me near you.
فمَنso who مُعيريone who lends me جناحَيtwo wings of طائِرٍa bird غَردٍwarbling
كيso that أَقطعَI may pass the time شَدواًsinging فيin أَعاليكِyour heights
Who will lend me the wings of a melodious bird,
Who, then, will lend me the two wings of a warbling bird,
that I may range your heights in song,
So I may spend my time singing among your highest branches,
فلاand so not أُنَفَّرَI be driven away عنfrom أَرضٍa land غُرِستِyou were planted بهاin it
وَلاand not يَرِنُّresounds بِصَوتيwith my voice غيرُother than واديكِyour valley
never to be driven from the land where you were planted,
And not be driven from the land where you were planted,
nor let any valley but yours ring with my voice?
And no valley but yours may resound with my voice?
