Is it your radiant brow, or the rising of the full moon?

And your slender stature, or a match for tawny spears?

And your hair, or a night whose veils hang loose?

And your mouth, or a necklace strung with pearls?

Blessed is He who fashioned you perfect in beauty,

And schooled the Harut of your eyelids in sorcery.

Since your face, O full moon, was a garden,

The tears of my eye streamed through it like a river.

Your shunning grieved me and inflamed my anguish,

And brought my passion into being when it robbed me of patience.

    You strut and gaze, then shun me, shying away;

And we have known all this in pale, tawny gazelles.

So prolong your estrangement; perhaps our standing

Together will be prolonged, my slayer, at the hour of the Last Gathering.

For, by God, nothing distracts me from loving you,

And though you vanish from my sight, your dwelling is in my thoughts.

By your stature, I am not drawn to other fair faces,

Even were I to melt from excessive distance and estrangement.

So, my master, the blood-redness of your cheek is my intercessor

Before the Hanbali of reproach, when he acts treacherously.

When asked, 'Whom do you love?' I allude to you

Under another's name, to shield my passion from disclosure.

O my reprover, forgetting is beyond reach; so leave me

To turn my heart on hot coals in loving him.

My torment through him is sweet as the coolness of his saliva,

And my excuse has become clear in chaste love.

And nothing has turned me from loving him but a panegyric

On what brings the Khedive of the age glory for all time.

A mighty ruler, whose governance among mankind

Has raised the banner of victory in his Egypt.

Praiseworthy in deeds—not even some of them can be numbered

By a discerning master of speech in verse and prose.

A noble lord, whose station rose above al-Simak,

And surpassed the shining sun and the full moon.

    فدام أَثيلَ المجد مرتَفِعَ القَدر

    Through him, inherited glory was clothed in his newly won glory;

So may he endure, rooted in glory and exalted in rank.

    أَلم تَرَها تُروى الوفودَ بلا نَهر

    And rain comes only from the seas of his bounty;

Have you not seen them quench the delegations' thirst without rebuff?

Have you not seen how rain weeps when it pours,

While this man bestows his gifts and laughs with good cheer?

Then tell the man who has sought to enumerate his qualities:

'Take your time, good sir! Can raindrops ever be counted?'

The glorious deeds of his high estate, whose fame has spread,

Have adorned Egypt and all who dwell in Egypt.

[O?] you who bestowed abundant favors on Egypt,

And they are now met with thanks, without denial.

O you who bestowed abundant favors on Egypt,

And they are now met with thanks, without denial.

And O adornment of the world and pupil of its eye,

Enjoy what you desire, O peerless one of the age!

And live proudly arrayed in the robe of glory and eminence,

And may you attain what you wish for your illustrious children.

And may you ever enjoy its good fortune at every moment,

And remain light of heart through all your days.

And may you always, in every affair, be guided aright

Toward goodness, while the years smile.

And may your full moon ever shine, blessed with success,

As pearls from the seas gleam upon the throat.
