صِفاتُ القَويضي فَتى مِشرَقٍ
يُحارُis bewildered لَهاby them العالِمُthe scholar الراسِخُdeeply learned
يُحارُ لَها العالِمُ الراسِخُ
The qualities of al-Quwayḍī, a youth of the East,
The qualities of Al-Qawīshī, a shining young man
bewilder the deeply learned scholar.
Puzzling to the deeply learned
ذَكِيٌّclever وَلَكِنَّهُand yet he لاذَنٌlabdanum (aromatic resin)
ذَكِيٌّ وَلَكِنَّهُ لاذَنٌ
أَصيلُwell-born ولَكِنَّهُand yet he كامِخُa fermented relish
أَصيلُ ولَكِنَّهُ كامِخُ
He is clever, yet he is labdanum;
Intelligent but without guile
he is well-born, yet he is a fermented relish.
