تَضاحَكَlaughed merrily الرَوضُthe garden لَمّاwhen أَنthat بَكىwept المَطَرُthe rain
فَلِلرَبيعُfor spring has رُبوعٌabodes زانَهاadorned them الزَهَرُthe flowers
The garden laughed when the rain wept.
The garden smiled when the rain wept
For spring has abodes adorned by flowers.
So for spring there are meadows adorned with flowers
لِلَّهِto God (in admiration) نَمنَمَةُfine tracery النَمامِthe fragrant nammām herb حينَwhen بَدَتit appeared
وَالوَردُand the roses يُنظَمُare strung وَالمَنثورُand the stock-flowers يَنتَثِرُscatter
God be praised for the nammām herb's fine tracery when it appeared,
For God the twittering of the warbler when it began
And roses are strung, while stock-flowers scatter.
And roses are strung and scattered blossoms scattered
فَاِشرَبso drink هَنيئاًwith pleasure عَلىby ضَوءِthe light of الهَزارِthe nightingale ضُحىًat midmorning
فَالطَيرُfor the birds تُطرِبُenrapture ماwhat لاnot يُطرِبُenraptures الوَتَرُthe string
So drink with pleasure by the nightingale's light at midmorning,
So drink happily in the light of the crescent at dawn
For birds bring rapture as no string can.
For the birds sing what the strings do not sing
وَبادِرِand hasten to الكَأسَthe cup مِنَfrom بَدرٍa full moon يَطوفُgoes around بِهاwith it
ظَبيٌa gazelle مِنَamong الحورِthe houris فيin أَلحاظِهِhis eyes حَوَرُstriking black-and-white contrast
And hasten to take the cup from a full moon who carries it round—
And take the cup from a full moon circulating among them
A gazelle among the houris, his eyes a vivid contrast of black and white.
A gazelle with the glances of a houri in its eyes
فَهَذِهِso this is الراحُthe wine وَالرَيحانُand the sweet basil يَصحَبُهاaccompanies it
وَالنَهرُand the river وَالزَهرُand the flowers وَالقُمرِيُّand the turtledove وَالقَمَرُand the moon
So here is the wine, and sweet basil accompanies it,
For this is comfort and basil accompanying it
And the river, the flowers, the turtledove, and the moon:
And the river and the flowers and the yellow and the moon
مُحاسِنٌbeauties وَجَلالِby the majesty of اللَهِGod ماnever التَأَمَتcame together
إِلّاexcept that تَصَرَّمَتِcame to an end الأَحزانُthe sorrows وَالفِكَرُand cares
Beauties that, by God's majesty, never come together
Beauties and the majesty of God - did grief and thought ever cease
Without sorrows and cares coming to an end.
Except that sorrows and thoughts withered away
