Rise and look—and pardon me, O heedless ones—upon
a full moon springing forth from the orbits of buttons,
عَلىupon قَضيبٍa slender bough أَراكٍan arak tree فيin كَثيبِa dune نَقاًfine sand

upon an arak bough in a dune of fine sand,
swayed by movements fraught with peril.
ماnot رامَتِsought الرومُthe Romans وَالأَتراكُand the Turks ماnot تَرَكَتleft behind

أَدَقَّmore slender مِنthan خَصرِهِhis waist فيin عَقدِthe knot of زُنّارِa girdle
The Romans never sought, nor did the Turks leave behind,
anything more slender than his waist within a knotted girdle.
الماءُwater وَالنارُand fire فيin خَدَّيهِhis two cheeks قَدindeed جُمِعاwere both joined
جَلَّexalted is المُؤَلِّفُthe One who unites بَينَbetween الماءِwater وَالنارِand fire
Water and fire have indeed been joined in his cheeks;
exalted is the One who unites water and fire!
وَقَدand now بَدَتappeared شَعَراتٌa few hairs فيon عَوارِضِهِthe sides of his face
كَأَنَهُنَّas though they were لَيالٍnights فَوقabove أَقمارِmoons
And a few hairs have now appeared on the sides of his face,
as though they were nights above moons.
