O friend, the doves have called and warbled.

Disregard whoever censures wine and drinking it.

Or do you not see autumn's trees, as though

their leaves were gold, though once they were chrysolite?

And the cup—you hand it over as silver whenever

you are serenaded in rapture, and take it back as gold,

from the hand of one radiant as morning, slender,

who shamed the boughs in grace and supple sway.

Wine toyed with his eye, making narcissi

of its lids—and with his cheek, making it a rose.

A moon who vanishes when boredom begins,

and I vanish for fear of the tale-bearers when he appears.

I cried out to his forelock and the radiance of his brow:

Glory be to the One who joined error with guidance!
