أَباO Abu الوَحشَal-Wahsh (the beast) جَمَّلتَyou have adorned أَهلَthe people of الأَدَبliterature
أَبا الوَحشَ جَمَّلتَ أَهلَ الأَدَب
لِأَنَّكَbecause you are أَطوَلُlongest قَوميmy people ذَنبtail
لِأَنَّكَ أَطوَلُ قَومي ذَنب
O Abu al-Wahsh, you have adorned the men of letters,
O father of the desert, you have beautified the people of literature
For you have the longest tail among my people.
For you are the one with the longest tail among my people
وَكَيفَand how تَكونُyou are صَغيرَlowly in المَحَلِّstanding
وَكَيفَ تَكونُ صَغيرَ المَحَلِّ
وَبَيتُكَand your verse أَكبَرُlargest ماwhat فيamong الخَشَبtimber
وَبَيتُكَ أَكبَرُ ما في الخَشَب
And how could you be of lowly standing,
And how can you be so humble
When your verse is the largest piece of timber?
When your house is the greatest among the trees
