أَرىI find الصَبرَpatience عَنaway from نَجدٍNajd أَمَرَّmore bitter مِنَthan الصَبرِbitter aloe sap
وَمُذand since بَعُدَتgrew distant لَيلىLayla فَلَيليso my night بِلاwithout فَجرِdawn
I find patience away from Najd more bitter than aloes.
Patience from Najd is more bitter than patience itself
And since Layla grew distant, my night has no dawn.
Since the night Layla left, my nights have had no dawn
وَقَدand indeed كُنتُI used to أَبكيweep مِنfrom يَدِthe hand of الهَجرِestrangement فيin الحِمىthe protected grounds
فَلَمّاthen when تَفَرَّقناwe parted بَكَيتُI wept عَلىfor الهَجرِestrangement
And I once wept at estrangement's hand in the sanctuary;
I used to weep from the pangs of separation in seclusion
then, when we parted, I wept for that estrangement.
But when we parted, I wept for the separation itself
فَلوso if كانَwere قَلبيmy heart صَخرَةًa rock لَبَكيتُهُمI would weep for them
كَمَas بَكَتِwept الخَنساءُal-Khansa حيناًfor a time عَلىover صَخرِSakhr
So, were my heart a rock, I would weep for them,
If my heart were a rock, they would make it weep
as al-Khansa wept for a time over Sakhr.
Like al-Khansa' wept over the rock one day
أُعالِجI wrestle with شَوقاًlonging فيin الأَصائِلِthe late afternoons وَالضُحىand the forenoon
بِبَردِwith the coolness of الهَوىlove النَجديِّNajdi حَيِّhail!
I wrestle with longing in the late afternoons and the forenoon,
I suffer passion in the late night and at dawn
with the coolness of Najdi love—hail chaste love!
With the Najdi love's chill, alive with chaste love's fever
أَموتُI die وَلاand no أَلفٌa thousand أَغيظُI vex بِنَيلِهاby gaining it
عَدُوّيmy enemy وَلاand no إِلفٌcompanion أَشُدُّI strengthen بِهِwith him أَزريmy back (strength)
I die, with no thousand whose gain would let me vex
I die but no thousand delights would appease
my enemy, and no companion with whom to strengthen my back.
My foe, nor any bonds strengthen my ally
