إِلىuntil كَمhow long لاnot يُفارِقُنيleave me الفِراقُseparation
وَأَحمِلُand I bear فيin الهَوىlove ماwhat لاnot يُطاقُcan be borne
How long will separation refuse to leave me,
How long will parting not leave me
while I bear in love what cannot be borne?
And I bear in love what cannot be borne
لَئِنif indeed دامَcontinues المَدىtime هَجراًestrangement وَبَيناًand separation
فَلاthen no شامٌSham لَدَيَّwith me وَلاand no عِراقُIraq
If time continues in estrangement and separation,
If estrangement and distance persist
then I have neither Sham nor Iraq.
Then I have no Syria or Iraq
أَقولُI say لِصاحِبيto my companion وَدُموعُand the tears عَينيof my eye
تَروقُdelight لِحاسِديto my envier وَدَميand my blood يُراقُis shed
I say to my companion, while the tears of my eye
I say to my companion while my eyes' tears
delight my envier and my blood is shed:
Flow for my envier and my blood is shed
أُسِرتُI was taken captive وَلَمand not تُغِرraid لِلسَبيto take captives خَيلٌhorses
قُتِلتُI was slain وَلَمand not تُقَمbe raised لِلحَربِfor war ساقُa leg
I was taken captive, though no horses raided for captives;
I was captured though no horses were sent to free the captive
I was slain, though no leg was raised for war.
I was killed yet no legs marched for war
