ذَرِabandon المُقامَstaying إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle ساءَكَdispleases you الطَلَبُthe quest
ذَرِ المُقامَ إِذا ما ساءَكَ الطَلَبُ
وَسِرand journey فَعَزمُكَfor your resolve فيهِin it الحَزمُprudence وَالأَرَبُand the aim
وَسِر فَعَزمُكَ فيهِ الحَزمُ وَالأَرَبُ
Give up staying when your quest brings you grief;
Leave the place if seeking there brings you distress,
And journey on: in your resolve lie prudence and your aim.
Though firm be your purpose, and sound be your case.
لاdo not تَقعُدَنَّremain (emphatic) بِأَرضٍin a land قَدalready عُرِفتَyou are known بِهاin it
لا تَقعُدَنَّ بِأَرضٍ قَد عُرِفتَ بِها
فَلَيسَfor ... not تَقطَعُcut فيin أَغمادِهاtheir sheaths القُضُبُthe swords
فَلَيسَ تَقطَعُ في أَغمادِها القُضُبُ
Never remain in a land where you are already known,
Set not your abode in a land that has known you
For swords do not cut while in their sheaths.
No lances are blunted in scabbards that grace.
أَلَمdid ... not? تَكُنbe لَكَfor you أَرضُearth اللَهِof God واسِعَةًspacious
أَلَم تَكُن لَكَ أَرضُ اللَهِ واسِعَةً
إِنif أَقفَرَتhas grown desolate جَلَّقٌJallaq ماnot أَقفَرَتhas grown desolate حَلَبُAleppo
إِن أَقفَرَت جَلَّقٌ ما أَقفَرَت حَلَبُ
Was God's earth not spacious enough for you?
Have you not all God's earth to call your dwelling?
If Jallaq has grown desolate, Aleppo has not.
No dearth making bare one land bare as another?
