O rider of the young camel between the wormwood and the laurel,

May God protect you from injustice and disgrace.

Turn aside to the camp of Kalb, and call out there:

Help, O al-Julāḥ, my dear companions and defenders!

May He never leave al-Shām bereft of your horses' neighing,

Nor your camels bereft of the traces of home.

How long will you remain heedless of vengeance for your cousin,

Like townsfolk, from whom no vengeance is expected?

    فَهَل بَصُرتُم بِمَقتولٍ بِأَبصارِ

    The eyes of the fair have indeed assailed him as raiders;

Have you, then, seen anyone slain by glances?

Moringa boughs—when the breeze blows through them,

They sway between sand dunes and moons.

Each pearly-toothed, dark-lipped one bears upon his lips

The water of al-ʿUdhayb over a vintner's tawny wine.

In every war, his eyebrow's bow spares you the need

For Ḥājib's bow in the days of Dhū Qār.
