عُجStop by بِالعَقيقِat al-ʿAqīq وَعَدِّand turn away عَنfrom تَصحيفِهِmispointing it
عُج بِالعَقيقِ وَعَدِّ عَن تَصحيفِهِ
لاNo خَيرَgood فيهِin it إِذاif اِستَقَلَّit stands alone مُصَحَّفاmispointed
لا خَيرَ فيهِ إِذا اِستَقَلَّ مُصَحَّفا
Stop at al-ʿAqīq, and avoid mispointing its name.
There is no good in it if it stands alone, mispointed.
ياO كاتِباًscribe بَخِلَتwere stingy يَداهُhis two hands بِأَحرُفٍwith letters
يا كاتِباً بَخِلَت يَداهُ بِأَحرُفٍ
ماذاWhat تَجودُdo you give generously إِذاif مَنَعتَyou withhold الأَحرُفاthe letters
ماذا تَجودُ إِذا مَنَعتَ الأَحرُفا
O scribe whose hands have been stingy with letters,
What will you give generously if you withhold letters?
