A union beyond all reach,
and an ear that heeds no reproacher.
لَقَدindeed أَخفَيتُI concealed داءَthe sickness الحُبِّof love حَتّىuntil

I concealed love's sickness until
I vanished from the watcher, so wasted had I grown.
وَكَيفَand how يَصُحّrecovers هَذاthis الجِسمُbody يَوماًone day
وَآفَتُهُand its affliction مِنَfrom الجَفنِthe eyelid العَليلِlanguid
And how can this body ever recover,
when its affliction comes from a languid eyelid?

And many a night as long as Judgment Day—
and who will help me through the long night?

And in it the dawn never rises,
nor does any star set.

In it I pour out my passion; were she to see me,
Buthayna would not declare her love for Jamil.

وَفيand amid قالٍtalk مِنَfrom الواشيthe slanderer وَقيلِand hearsay

How long must we live amid rejection and estrangement,
and amid the slanderer's talk and hearsay?
تُرىI wonder يَوماًone day نَرىwe see فيهِin it الأَمانيthe wishes
وَتَجمَعُand gathers شَملَناour scattered company كَأسُa cup الشَمولِof wine
I wonder—shall we one day see our wishes fulfilled,
and a cup of wine reunite us,
وَتَعطِفُand turns ليtoward me عَواطِفَthe affections مَنof whoever جَفانيshunned me

and turn toward me the affections of the one who shunned me,
and my burning anguish be cured of its bitterness?

He sets himself to shun me, in loathing and aloofness;
and the signs of one grown weary will not stay hidden.
وَفيand in صَبريmy patience عَلىwith التَقبيحِugly treatment عُذرٌan excuse

And I have an excuse for enduring ugly treatment,
when it comes from a beautiful face.
