O gentle one, soothing to hearts,
Mourned by both friends and foes,
You were the pupil of my eye,
And the iris of my sight.
You were mourned by the drinkers and the cups,
And by the singers from the taverns to the brothels.
O sheikh, neither your eight decades
Nor that white hair after the blackness,
Kept that spear from reaching you,
And joining you with the tribe of ‘Aad.
Neither ‘Uwais nor the son of Al ‘Usayfir remains,
Nor the son of As-Summan among the peers.
They gloated when you died though death -
No gloating by enviers is of use therein.
May Allah have mercy on him who saw the death of the sheikh,
And came well-prepared with piety - the best provision.
