حَبيبٌa beloved لَناof ours واعِدٌone who promises مَخلَفَone who breaks his promise
يَجورُhe acts unjustly عَلَيناtoward us وَماand does not يُنصِفُact fairly
A beloved of ours promises, then breaks his word;
he wrongs us and is never fair.
بِكُلِّin every قِباءٍrobe لَهُof his صَعدَةٌa spear
وَفيand in كُلِّeach جَفنٍeyelid لَهُof his مُرهَفُa keen blade
In every robe of his, a spear;
and in each eyelid of his, a keen blade.
فَيَذهَلُso is stunned مِنby بَأسِهِhis might عَنتَرٌʿAntar
وَيَخجَلُand is abashed مِنby حُسنِهِhis beauty يوسُفُYusuf
So ʿAntar is stunned by his might,
and Yusuf is abashed by his beauty.
أَماah وَبُروقِby the flashes of الثَناياthe front teeth الَّتيwhich
بِهاin them المِسكُmusk وَالشُهدُand honey وَالقَرقَفُand wine
Ah, by the flashes of the front teeth which
hold musk and honey and wine—
لَقَدindeed حِرتُI was bewildered فيby قَمَرٍa moon أَحوَرٍdark-eyed
لَناof ours ماnever يَغيبُsets وَماand never يُكسَفُis eclipsed
I was indeed bewildered by a dark-eyed moon
of ours, who never sets and is never eclipsed.
شَرِبناwe drank عَلىgazing upon وَجهِهِhis face لَيلَةًone night
عُيونُthe eyes of سَحائِبُهاits clouds تَذرِفُshed tears
We drank, gazing on his face, one night,
while the eyes of its clouds shed tears.
وَحَرُّand the heat of الكَوانينَthe braziers مُستَعذَبٌfound pleasant
بِبَردِamid the cold of الكَوانينَthe Kanun months (December and January) مُستَطرَفُa welcome delight
And the braziers' heat was sweet,
a welcome delight in the Kanun months' cold,
لَدىbeside شَمعَةٍa candle مِثلَlike لَونِthe color of المُحِبِّthe lover
وَريحُand the scent of الحَبيبِthe beloved إِذاwhen تَرشِفُyou sip
beside a candle, like a lover in hue,
and like the beloved in scent when you sip.
تَموتُit dies اِنطِفاءًby going out إِذاif سولِمَتit is left in peace
وَتَحياand it lives وَهامَتُهاwhile its head تُقطَفُis plucked
It dies, extinguished, if left in peace,
yet lives while its head is plucked.
فَقُلتُthen I said وَقَدand already غابَhad vanished جَيشُthe army of السَحابِthe clouds
وَطَرفيand my gaze عَنِfrom الحِبِّthe beloved ماnever يَطرِفُturns away
Then I said, when the army of clouds had vanished,
and my gaze never strayed from the beloved:
كَأَنَّas though الثُرَيّاthe Pleiades وَبَدرَand the full moon of السَماءِthe sky
وَأَنجُمُهاand its stars طُلَّعٌrisen تَرجُفُtremble
As though the Pleiades and heaven's full moon,
and its stars, risen and trembling,
يَدٌa hand قَدhas أَشارَتpointed إِلىtoward وَردَةٍa rose
وَحَولَهُماand around them both نَرجِسٌnarcissus مُضعَفُdouble-flowered
were a hand pointing toward a rose,
with double-flowered narcissus around them both.
