Chess never met in an assembly

Neither chess nor backgammon players gathered

with backgammon, full of gossip and chatter,

Chatting idly back and forth

إِلّا لَعَنتَ الشَيخَ نوحاً وَلَم

إِلّا لَعَنتَ الشَيخَ نوحاً وَلَم

أَقصُر مِنَ اللَعنِ عَلى الصولي

أَقصُر مِنَ اللَعنِ عَلى الصولي

without your cursing the elder Noah; nor did I

stint in cursing al-Suli,

Nor did their curses fall short of the hag

لِأَنَّها لِقُبحِ ما عِندَها

لِأَنَّها لِقُبحِ ما عِندَها

تُقَدِّمُ الشاةَ عَلى الفَيلِ

تُقَدِّمُ الشاةَ عَلى الفَيلِ

for, owing to the ugliness of what it contains,
