قُلتُI said وَقَدand already أَقبَلَapproached ياقوتُYaqut
فيin فَمِهِhis mouth دُرٌّpearls وَياقوتُand rubies
I said, as Yaqut drew near:
I said, as Yaqut approached:
In his mouth are pearls and rubies.
In his mouth are pearls and rubies.
أَسِنَّةٌspearheads زُرقٌblue بِأَجفانِهِin his eyelids
أَمor جالَتِswept about البيضُthe bright swords المَصاليتُthe keen-edged ones
Are there steel-blue spearheads at his eyelids,
Are those blue spearheads in his eyelids,
or have keen, gleaming swords swept there?
or have bright, keen swords swept about?
كَأَنَّماas though أَلحاظُهُhis glances بابِلٌBabylon
فيهِنَّin them هاروتُHarut وَماروتُand Marut
As though his glances were Babylon—
It is as though his glances were Babylon,
within them are Harut and Marut.
with Harut and Marut within them.
