وَسِرنا يَمنَةً وَسَرَوا شِمالا
They drew apart after being near, out of weariness.
And we went right, while they traveled by night to the left.

So on the morning of parting you see nothing but
captives, or camel-drivers, or camels.

And a well-proportioned youth, resembling a Khatti spear in hue,
and in suppleness, swaying, and straightness.

وَلَوand if زارَvisited الخَيالَthe phantom رَأىwould see خَيالاa wraith
وَلَو زارَ الخَيالَ رَأى خَيالا
I thought—though no phantom of him had visited me—
that, were his phantom to visit, it would see a wraith.

qualities that have made my body a toothpick?

The gazelle has hunted me with his two eyes,
though formerly I used to hunt gazelles.

And a woman said, 'How long this delay,
when wealth has turned away from your hands?'

So I said, 'My course is toward Salah al-Din,
a youth who has attained chivalry and beauty.'

Seek his face, and you will find right guidance;
and how can one who seeks the crescent moon go astray?

كَماjust as فاقَhe surpassed الأَنامَhumankind أَخاًin brother وَخالاand maternal uncle
كَما فاقَ الأَنامَ أَخاً وَخالا
He has indeed surpassed mankind in father and paternal uncle,
as he has surpassed mankind in brother and maternal uncle.

He loves glory and eminence by nature,
as lovers yearn for union.
كَأَنَّas though المالَwealth فيin كَفَّيهِhis two hands ماءٌwater

إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle السائِلُthe petitioner اِستَسقاهُasks him for water سالاit flows
إِذا ما السائِلُ اِستَسقاهُ سالا
It is as though wealth in his hands were water:
when a petitioner asks him for water, it flows.

Your station, even at its lowest, is among the stars,
and your rival, even at his highest, is in the earth's depths.

And you come from people most formidable in battle,
without doubt, and noblest in their men.

They stood as seas in their generosity,
and became mountains in their forbearance.
